  • 26% of 9 to 10 year olds, 57% of 11 to 12 year olds and 88% of 15-24 year olds have an account on a social network.
  • 4h10 is the average time spent on Internet per week by 6 to 10 year olds, as opposed to 5h10 for 7 to 12 year olds and 14h10 for 13 to 19 year olds.
  • 63% of 12 to 24 year olds cannot spend 3 days offline without missing Internet.
  • 14% of Internet users aged 12 and above feel they miss it after a few hours.

Mobile Phones

  • 65% of French people aged 12 and above are equipped with a smartphone.
  • 75% use it when they come out of class
  • 54% admit have received text messages or phone calls during class hours.
  • 47% use it during class hours
  • 7% have already filmed a professor during class.

This means that children do text during school hours and connect to Internet to visit their favourite apps and websites on the pretext that they are bored.

Who are the victims?

  • On average, 1 of ever 10 children is a victim of bullying.
  • A majority of girls (58% as opposed to 42% boys)
  • 12 to 14 year olds seem to be the most exposed (45% as opposed to 25% for 9 to 11 year olds and 28% for 15 to 17 year olds).
  • Accountable for 20 to 25% of school absenteeism (source: Le Figaro, article published on 16/09/2013)
  • 3 to 4 teenagers commit suicide every year because of bullying.
  • 40% of students admit having already been subject to an online aggression.
  • 22% of bullied children don’t talk to anyone about it.
  • 61% of bullied students admit having suicidal thoughts.
  • 5 to 6% of mocked children report the situation to an adult in their school.
  • The most conducive locations are: school canteen, school toilets, locker rooms, school playground and right outside the school at the end of classes.
